There are many great websites for you to use no matter where your family is or was. This class takes you into the realm of records searching on the internet. Registration required. Library Community Courses Coming to Nixa

2011-12-21T12:24:00.000-08:00

Thanks to a generous grant from the Nixa Community Foundation, CCL will soon begin offering technology courses at the Nixa Community Center. The library currently offers basic computer classes for all Christian County residents in the library meeting room each month.

The grant provides funds for the library to purchase a multiple laptop carrying case to easily transport computers to teaching sites like the Center, a portable projector, and a video camera to record classes so library patrons who can’t come to classes may view them online.

“Until we can secure voter approval to make library facilities more accessible to all county residents, our focus is on finding the time and resources to take our services out into the community ,” said library Technology Assistant Katy Pattison. “We’re very grateful to the Nixa Community Foundation for this opportunity.”

Classes will begin in Nixa in February 2012, and eventually expand to other locations in the county.

An Evening with Wayne Glenn: Lynchings, Featherbed Thefts, Burnouts, and Sawmill Murders in Good Ol’ Christian County

Thursday, December 1st, 6:30-7:30am Join local historian Wayne Glenn as he continues his discussion of some of the more sordid events in Christian County History, followed by refreshments. The author will also sell and sign his latest book, “Christian County History A-Z,” a 460 page hardback that includes 1700 photos and a detailed name index. No registration required.

We're offering a four part series of our most basic computer courses in November and December. These courses help students new to computers learn the ins and outs of their computers and how to use the internet. You don't need to sign up for all four courses, and you may repeat courses if space is available. You are not required to take the classes in order, although we do recommend taking them in order since the content from each course builds on knowledge taught in the preceding course.

Microsoft Excel 2007 Basics
Does adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing long lists of numbers sound terrifying? Relax and let Excel do the work for you. Crunch those numbers, add charts and graphs, calculate your monthly budget, or keep a tidy address book. In this class you will be learning the basics of using the Excel spreadsheet program.

Blogging Basics
Terms like blog, post, RSS feed, facebook, Twitter, or Tweet freak you out. Explore the wild world of blogs and blogging with us. We will show you the ropes and the paths through the Web 2.0 virtual world.

Job Search Success

We are offering a new course and workshop in May to help patrons who are job searching. "Job Search Success" is a two hour course designed to help students fill out job applications, create resumes, and ace job interviews. Later in the month, we're offering a Career Workshop. This is an opportunity for job searchers to use our laptop lab to create their resume or search for jobs on the internet. Instructors will be available to assist. We also recommend that students who want to create a resume take the Microsoft Word 2007 Basics course, which is offered in May as well. Introduction to Computers Part I
Can’t tell your mother board from your floppy drive? This class is for you! Learn the basic terms and use of computers. We will be learning the parts of the computer and what they do, how to use the mouse and keyboard, and how to use and manipulate the "windows" in your computer.
Introduction to Computers Part IIIn this class you will learn more computer basics. This class is an extension of the beginner class: “Introduction to Computers”. We will be learning how to create and manage folders to organize your desktop. Also how to change your desktop settings and some nifty programs your computer has to offer.

Introduction to the Internet
This class is a very basic internet class. In this class you will learn terms such as browser, URL, search engines, links, etc. After this class you will be able to open a browser, navigate to a website, and navigate within a website.

Searching the InternetCan't find what you are looking for on the internet? This class is for you! We will be covering searching techniques and discussing various search engines and how they work. Also we will talk about how best to phrase your search strings to get better results.
Introduction to E-Mail
This is for those who have never had an email account and would like to have one. We will go over the basics of email, set up an account, and practice sending and receiving a few.

The Library Online
Learn what resources are available at the Christian County Library website. Learn how to use your library card to access your account, or use one of the many great databases that the library has to offer.

Microsoft Word 2007 Basics
This class teaches students basic word processing tasks in Microsoft Word 2007, including creating, printing, and saving documents, formatting text, plus an overview of some of the more advanced features available in the program.

Job Search Success
This two-hour course, presented with cooperation from the Missouri Career Center, is designed to help students fill out job applications, create resumes and cover letters, and ace job interviews. Information on the best strategies for finding a job will also be presented.

Career Workshop
This is an open workshop for students to use our computers to search for jobs, create a resume, or do other job searching activities. Instructors will be available to assist.

Start Your Family Tree
Begin at the beginning. This is a very basic class on how to start tracing your family history. This class is made for anyone who would like to start working on their genealogy. Also for anyone would like to get the work that they have already done organized in order to continue their research.

Internet Research for GenealogistsDiscover what resources are available for genealogy enthusiasts online. Not just for Christian County but anyone interested in researching their past. There are many great websites for you to use no matter where your family is or was. This class takes you into the realm of records searching on the internet.

Hands-On Computer Learning Lab
This is lab time to practice hands on experience using skills learned from other LCC courses as well as learn keyboarding and brush up on your mouse skills. This is a come and go class with the lab open three hours. Library staff instructors will be available for your questions. If you arrive and the lab is set up but no one is in the room please see the front desk and we will get a instructor for you straight away.

Laptop Lab

In June of 2007 the Christian County Library received a Technology Ladder Grant from the Missouri State Library that would allow us to purchase the equipment for a laptop lab. In July of 2007 three library staff members were sent to attend the "How to be and Effective Technical Trainer" workshop in Columbia Missouri to learn how best to teach a group of adult students. The computers and other equipment was purchased in late 2007. This equipment included; 21 laptop computers, a locking cart to store and charge them, 20 keyboard and mouse sets, a projector and screen, a rolling lectern with sound system, and other various technical equipment. The classes began in January 2008 with "Introduction to Computers". We have added various classes since then and have at least five classes per month since that time with one exception. We are unable to hold classes in April and October due to the Friends of the Library book sale.
