Introduction to the Computer


Part I: Meet the Computer JUNE 1, 2015, 5:30 - 6:30PM
Pre-Registration: Opens 5/11/15
When learning to use a computer it is best to begin at the beginning. Learn
how to turn on the computer. Learn what the basic computer parts are and
what they do. Learn how to use a mouse and a touchpad. Learn what the
keyboard does and how to improve your typing skills. Learn about storage
devices. What are they and what do they do? Learn what safe shutdown is
and why it is a good thing.

Part II: Software JUNE 8, 2015, 5:30 - 6:30PM
Pre-Registration: Opens 5/18/15
Learn about software. What is the difference between hardware and
software? What is software and what job does it perform? We will talk about
different operating systems and discuss the differences between them.
Finally, we will talk about what “windows” are and learn how to manipulate
them.

Part III: Settings JUNE 15, 2015, 5:30 - 6:30PM
Pre-Registration: Opens 5/25/15
Learn how to go into the Control Panel on your computer and discover
the tasks you can perform from there. Learn how to change your desktop
settings and give your computer a more customized look. Learn about some
built-in features that make your computer more accessible for those with
disabilities.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
Part IV: Shortcuts JUNE 22, 2015, 5:30 - 6:30PM
Pre-Registration: Opens 6/1/15
Learn to use copy and paste to save information on the internet, in email,
or on your hard drive. Learn to keep your files organized neatly so you can
recover information on your computer easily. Learn to create new folders, to
rename old ones, and to locate files that you have saved on your computer
Learn what keyboard shortcuts are and how to use them.

Introduction to the Internet


Part I: Get Connected JULY 6, 2015, 5:30 - 6:30PM
Pre-Registration: Opens 6/15/15
In this class we will discuss where the internet came from, what equipment
that you need to connect to the internet, and what types of software are
available. Learn what a URL is and why it is important. We will also talk
about some basic navigation tips.

INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET
Part II: Searching JULY 13, 2015, 5:30 - 6:30PM
Pre-Registration: Opens 6/22/15
Can’t find what you are looking for on the internet? This is the course for
you! We cover searching techniques, discuss various search engines and
how they work, and we talk about how best to phrase your search strings to
get better results.

Part III: Online Communications JULY 20, 2015, 5:30 - 6:30PM
Pre-Registration: Opens 6/29/15
Learn how to use social media, email, chat rooms and blogs. Don’t know
what those things are? That’s okay. We teach you that too!

Part IV: Cyber Security JULY 27, 2015, 5:30 - 6:30PM
Pre-Registration: Opens 7/6/15
Would you like to get online but are afraid to catch a virus? Would you like
to begin paying bills or shopping online but are afraid that a cyber-criminal
will steal your credit card or other personal information? Learn what kinds
of scams are out there and how to be more careful and aware while online
and in your e-mail box. This class will address computer and online security
techniques.

Learn the basic word processing tasks in Microsoft Word 2007, 2010, and 2013, including creating,

Start Your Family Tree

Begin at the beginning. This Library Community Course covers the basics of tracing your family history. It's for anyone who would like to start working on their genealogy, and those who would like to get the work that they have already done organized in order to continue their research. Microsoft Excel Basics
